Petrol in Goa to cost more - Rs 56/litre

Though still less than other states, petrol will now cost more in Goa – around Rs 56 per litre – from 1 January.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has backtracked on its earlier assurance of ‘No VAT’ on petrol, making it cheaper.
With around five per cent or little more VAT – not yet finalised – petrol would be costly by around Rs 4.
Presently, it costs Rs 52.57 per litre, cheaper than diesel – Rs 54.87 per litre.
Chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar has confirmed that petrol would now always be more costly than diesel.
Goa government’s decision, at the initiative of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, of imposing hardly 0.1 per cent VAT on petrol had made Goa the state with cheapest petrol price.
Later, in August, Parrikar had hiked the VAT up to 3.5 per cent.
But the economic crisis has compelled the government to change its policy. Goa mobilises revenue from all possible channels since mining stopped three years ago.
Though not yet finalised, the additional VAT on petrol would be between 3 to 5 per cent.
While fuel prices fluctuate in the international market, Parsekar however has assured that petrol would still not cost more than Rs 56 per litre.
In other states, petrol costs more than Rs 75 per litre.
