Slum Theatre emerging in India: Matkari
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 01 November 2014 19:55 ISTSlum Theatre will probably be another gift of India to World Theatre if yet another experiment of a renowned script writer of India Ratnakar Matkari becomes a success.
Matkari, a well known script writer in Marathi, disclosed his ongoing experiment in Thane district among around 40 different groups of slum children, after inaugurating the first Konkani Theatre Conference in Goa today evening at Ponda.
"The slum children have written their own scripts based on realistic themes and they are directing it. It would be called Natya Jallosh (theatre festivity)" said Matkari.
He appealed to the young theatre artists to take the theatre movement ahead with new experiments while sticking to reality.
"Don't forget the traditional theatre and bring new life in the theatre", he made a fervent appeal.
There is nothing called experimental theatre. Experimentation comes when the existing set up cannot fulfil the need of the drama, he said.
He also said that drama is a literary creation of visualised performance. It doesn't stop at mere writing like other nonfiction creations, said Matkari.
