Narvekar, 3 others re-arrested

Former deputy chief minister Dayanand Narvekar, along with three other Goa Cricket Association officials, was re-arrested and then released today evening, in connection with the final cricket ODI played here between India and Australia on 6 April.

The officials, re-arrested along with the politician-turned-GCA president Narvekar, are secretary Vinod Phadke and treasurer Rama Shankardas while joint secretary Vivek Pednekar was arrested for the fist time.

They are charged under section 336 of IPC, for endangering human life. The security lapse on the part of the GCA could have resulted into stampede and even collapse of the stadium, state the police.

As the GCA in collusion with the ticket contractor had sold bogus tickets of almost equal number of the stadium capacity, the police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the cricket fans outside the stadium.

Narvekar, along with Shankardas, Fadte and seven others including ticket contractor Chinmay Fallari, were already arrested last month in a bogus ticket scam. In fact the Margao police are expected to file a chargesheet this week in this regard.

According to police, this is a separate case, of endangering human life. Since the offence is bailable, all four of them were released after seeking bond of Rs 10,000 each.

While not barricading the stadium premises properly insides as well as outside, the officials had not and not installing the UV machines to check genuine tickets. They also did not open the gates in time, due to which the police had to then break it open, to allow the enraged crowd outside the stadium on 6 April.
