Panic has struck both Bicholim and Sattari talukas as incessant rains have overfilled the dams at Anjune and Amthane.

While water is released at all the four gates of Anjune dam in Sattari, the Amthane dam has already started overflowing after crossing its storing capacity.

As a result, the weekly bazar of Bicholim today had a deserted look with vendors hesitating to sit for sale, fearing flood.

Bicholim depty collector Narayan Gad said they have alerted the villagers of Latambarcem, Sal, Menkurem, Advalpal and Pirna in Bicholim taluka due to overflowing of Amthane dam.

He has kept his disaster managemnet teams ready also to face eventuality in the villages of Keri, Morlem, Prarye and Karapur as Anjune dam is filled up to 92.4 metres, beyond the danger mark.

As a result, the water level of Bicholim and Sankhli rivers has also started flowing at the height of 3.5 metres.

MLAs of the respective areas – Naresh Sawal, Anant Shete and Pramod Sawant also visited the danger areas today to review the sitaution.

WRD assisitant engineer P V Sreekumar informed that all the doors of the bunds of river Chapora from Sal have also been opened to control the water level from this river.

It has also added to massive soil erosion on the banks of river Chapora, which may ultimately affect the farming activity in future.
