RTI Commissioners by 29 July

A decision on chief information commissioner and state information commissioner for Goa would be taken by 29 July.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar today informed the media that a meeting of the high level committee has been convened on 29 July.

The committee consists of chief minister Parrikar, opposition leader Pratapsing Rane and deputy chief minister Francisco D’Souza.

RTI activist Rajan Ghate is presently sitting on indefinite hunger strike, since yesterday, demanding immediate appointment of CIC and SIC.

The information commission is functioning without both the posts for over one year now.

Goa government had invited applications and recommendations for the posts, which were to be later scrutinized by a three-member committee at secretary level to shortlist the names.

Parrikar however clarified today that the exercise of applications, recommendations or scrutiny is not necessary as per the RTI act.

“I thought of following the system for the purpose of transparency”, he said today.

He said the high level committee has full powers to go beyond these names and appoint somebody else since this procedure is not part of the act.

“But I want to do it in a transparent manner”, he said.
