File FIR against extortionists using RTI: NCP
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 13 July 2013 14:16 ISTThe Nationalist Congress Party has demanded that chief minister should file FIR against those involved in extortion of money using Right to Information Act rather than being a silent abetter to the crime.
Trajano D’Mello, the chief spokesperson of the NCP, has reacted sharply to chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s statement that few RTI activists, not all, are involved in extorting money.
“It means Parrikar knows who these people are. Then why is he not filing FIR against them”, he asked at a press conference today.
If not, said D’Mello, the chief minister either becomes an abetter to the crime or is trying to create fear psychosis among the RTI activists in order to blackmail them.
Being a frequent user of RTI to seek information, the NCP spokesperson also asked whether he is delaying the appointment of Chief Information Commissioner and the State Information Commissioner to accommodate any officer who would retire shortly.
D’Mello thus demanded a public assurance from the CM that no other person than who have applied would be selected for both the posts.
While objecting to the pre-selection committee of subordinate officers to shortlist the candidates, he also demanded that the committee be reconstituted with persons of integrity and with a record of not being subservient to political powers.
D’Mello also decried CM’s public attack on media, terming it as clear signs of intolerance to criticism, transparency and accountability.
