Goa costly than Delhi to live & work
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 04 June 2013 21:35 ISTGoa is costlier than Delhi, the national capital of India. And the minimum wage paid to Goan worker is also less than Delhi.
This is pointed out by trade union leader Christopher Fonseca.
He has worked on a price index, which is 206 points in Delhi while 247 points in Goa. It means Goa is 21 per cent more expensive than Delhi.
Contrary to this, Fonseca observes that the minimum daily wage paid to Goan worker is hardly Rs 215 while it is Rs 300 for a Delhi worker. Almost Rs 85 less.
The AITUC general secretary also compares price of the beef today – Rs 200 per kg – compared to Rs 100 a year ago.
“The common man is suffering while the middle man is allowed to earn super-profits by the local BJP government”, alleges Fonseca.
Compared to the rest of the country, he says the prices of essential commodities including rice, wheat, dal, sugar, edible oil, grocery, vegetables, eggs, beef and meat have gone beyond the reach of the common-man and the salaried people in Goa.
Similar is the case of the prices of life-saving drugs, medicines, water , electricity, housing, education and transport, observes Fonseca.
He alleges that the government has become insensitive to the anguish and sufferings of the people and has also failed to crack -down on the middle men, hoarders and black-marketeers.
The AITUC has thus demanded to open retail outlets in every village and town to ensure uninterrupted supply of all essential commodities through the government owned outlets at subsidized rates.
