Mine-hit Goans garner 'national' support

The Goa Mining People’s Front met BJP president Rajnath Singh today in Delhi, seeking his support to the cause of mining-dependent people in Goa.

The Front also presented memorandums at the offices of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The two-day dharna of around 1000 people at Jantar Mantar ended with a press conference, where Christopher Fonseca demanded a central package of Rs 5000 crore to compensate the people hit by mining ban.

All the three Goan MPs – Shantaram Naik and Francisco Sardinha from the Congress and Shripad Naik from the BJP – visited the demonstrators once again today.

BJP leader Gopinath Munde also visited the demonstrators.

At a press conference, Fonseca also alleged that the attempts of Goa government   to  levy  more  and   more  taxes on the people  will  result  into more  burden on  the people of Goa.

“The ban on mining has ruined   the lives of thousands of families and even the number of school  drop-outs has increased, besides steep rise in crime rate”, he said.
