Roadside hawkers to be evicted
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 12 April 2013 21:44 ISTAll roadside hawkers, except the local villagers, would be evicted shortly.
“Please don’t come to me requesting to retain some of them”, chief minister Manohar Parrikar warned all the 39 MLAs in the House today.
He plans to evict all the roadside hawkers selling fruits, coconut water, watermelon, sugarcane juice as well as various other consumables.
Firstly they create lots of garbage on the road, he said, and secondly the parking on the highways has become a major nuisance.
The only exception would be the locals, who sell the local products like vegetables or other farm products.
“They would be retained until we create special farmer markets for them at a particular place along the highways”, said Parrikar.
The discussion in the Assembly was actually on the issue of garbage disposal, raised by Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte.
In order to clear the garbage littered along the national highways, Parrikar said the government would also create garbage dump stations every five kilometers.
“We will also start highway patrolling and anyone seen throwing garbage on the road would be nabbed”, he warned.
The state government has already started cleaning up the national highways from 18 March.
“We have already college huge quantity of garbage including pet bottle, beer cans and plastic waste”, said the chief minister.
Following this, he said the government would take up the district roads from May.
