The national-level General Council of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has demanded immediate resumption of mining operations in Goa on scientific and sustainable manner.
Goa’s trade union leader Christopher Fonseca moved a resolution in this regard at a three-day meeting held at Thiruvanathpuram in Kerala.
Goa AITUC secretary Adv Suhas Naik said the resolution highlighted the plight of mining dependent people in Goa.
Families of the mining dependent people are actually living in distress and penury due to total ban on mining operations, the resolution stated.
Over one lakh people have become jobless and the ban has impacted another 3.5 lakh people all over the state as it has affected the entire economy including business, trade, markets and financial sectors.
The AITUC general council has thus urged both the state and central government to take urgent measures to ensure immediate resumption of mining operations.
