Are Goa's 'unemployed' really jobless?

Are the unemployed youth registered with the government really unemployed? Even the government does not know.

Labour and Employment minister Avertano Furtado himself has admitted it.

Replying to the question raised by Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho, Furtado says Goa has over one lakh youth unemployed (1,14,002 to be precise).

At the same time, Furtado admits that his Employment Exchange has no criteria to find out whether these ‘unemployed’ youth are working in private organizations.

In fact, says Furtado, the Employment Exchange cannot enforce any employment of locals in private organizations.

The government also does not know whether these ‘unemployed’ youth have left the state for better prospects to foreign countries.

Even there is no criteria to find out how many of these ‘unemployed’ youth have crossed the age of 40, after which you do not get government jobs.

In reality, the Employment Exchange provides figures of only those, who do not have a government job.

Unfortunately, the government calls it a figure of unemployed youth, giving an impression that government employment is employment and non-government employment is ‘unemployment’.
