'Education without Character is disaster'

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar said he wants to focus more on character-building rather than mere education.

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Parrikar said: “education without character can lead to disaster.”

Though it is important to provide all kind infrastructural facilities to the educational institutions, Parrikar said the most important aspect is providing good teachers.

He recalled one teacher from IIT, who had given a student 120 marks out of 100.

“When asked, the teacher said he deserved more marks since he knows much more than me”, recalled Parrikar.

Ultimately what is an examination, asked Parrikar; it is a comparison of the teacher’s knowledge with the knowledge of the student.

To stress the point further, he once again narrated the story of watermelons grown in his Parra village.

Parra was to organise a watermelon eating contest among the teenagers every year. The best and big watermelons were kept in the basket to eat, with a condition that the seeds would be thrown in one common basket. This was automatically saving the best seeds in the village.

After some years, the villagers became greedy and started selling the best watermelons in the market. The result? The best seeds disappeared and the village started growing sub-standard watermelons.

“We need to implement this genetic concept in education, by providing best teachers to the institution which can work as the best seed to develop quality students”, said Parrikar.

He also floated an idea of getting good teachers to professional colleges, who can generate interest among students in the subjects, rather than studying it as a mere examination exercise.

While speaking on the demands for grants for higher and technical education, Parrikar thus said his government would focus on three areas – infrastructure, conducive atmosphere and best quality teachers.
