NCP questions legality in appointing Lokayukta

Nationalist Congress Party has questioned the procedure of appointing Justice B Sudharsan Reddy as the first Lokayukta of Goa.

NCP chief spokesperson Trajano D’Mello today questioned the grounds on which applications of three retired judges who applied for Lokayukta post were rejected and Justice Reddy was handpicked.

Based on the RTI information he has procured, retired Delhi high court judge Justice H R Malhotra and two retried Kerala high court judges, Justice Sasidharan Nambiar and Justice M Ramchandran had applied for the post of Lokyukta.

Instead of choosing one among them, D’Mello said, the search committees shortlisted three other names – retired Bombay high court judge Justice V R Kingaonkar as well as two retired Supreme Court judges – Justice P Ravindran and Justice B Sudarshan Reddy.

The search committee consisted of the chief secretary, the law secretary and the advocate general of Goa.

D’Mello sought to know on what grounds three more names were handpicked by rejecting all the three names of the judged, who had duly applied as per the legal requirement.

Though D’Mello agreed that Justice Reddy is a sincere judge with high credentials, he expressed doubt whether he would decide any corruption case filed against the chief secretary, the law secretary or the advocate general.
