V-VI students to get tablets for Rs 25

Students of standard V and VI will get tablet or a notebook for mere Rs 25 by end of the academic year.

Students from scheduled caste and scheduled tribe would be however charged only Rs 10.

Similarly, students of Std XI and XII would also be delivered this year’s pending quota of laptops.

The Directorate of Education has begun the process by sending a circular to all the schools, to submit the proposal by 28 February.

The state government learnt to have made a provision of Rs 95 crore for the purpose.

The DoE expects around 40,000 applications from Std V and VI for the tablets or notebooks.

Additional director of education Anil Powar said they would also take an undertaking from each parent, having no objection to supplying their child a tablet.

“Some parents may have a difference of opinion on supplying such gadgets to their children and thus is this undertaking”, said Powar.

Obviously, children whose parents would not give such undertaking would not be given tablets.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who also holds education portfolio, had announced this scheme in last year’s budget.

He plans to utilise the tablet for e-learning, using Goa Broadband service and the data centre, through which the content prepared by experienced retired teachers would be made available to the students.
