PM assures to try to restart mines

Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh has assured the mining people that the central government would work positively towards restarting legal mining as soon as possible.

He met a delegation of Goa’s people, who are affected due to stoppage of mining, for almost half an hour.

The delegation was led by union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.

The PM, at this time, was accompanied by union environment and forest minister Jayanthi Natrajan as well as their respective ministry secretaries.

According to trade union leader Christopher Fonseca, even Natrajan has assured the delegation to study all the mining leases and place before the Supreme Court a positive case to restart mining.

Fonseca as well as barge owners’s leader Atul Jadhav briefed the PM about Goa’s situation, besides presenting a memorandum.

The delegation consisted of total 12 persons, representing different trades of mining industry including barge owners, truck owners, traders as well as workers.
