Govt begins Ladli Laxmi disbursement of Rs 1 lakh

Goa government today formally rolled out its Ladli Lakshmi scheme, an initiative under which a sum of Rs 1 lakh is given to women for their wedding.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar distributed sanction letters to around 500 odd beneficiaries of the scheme, who will be paid money through designated banks, once they are married.

Parrikar said that the scheme is available to all women between 18 to 40 years of age across religious lines and political affiliations.

He said that the scheme aims to curb female foeticides in the state which may disturb the gender ratio between males and females.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the recently held state legislative assembly elections had assured the implementation of this scheme, which would ease the financial burden on the parents during their girl child’s wedding.

The state women and child welfare minister Dilip Parulekar said that government has earmarked Rs 150 crore for the current financial year for the scheme, and the amount can be enhanced, if the number of beneficiaries goes up.

The state government, he said, aims to cover 15,000 beneficiaries for the current financial year.

All 'ladlis' will get the benefit or only those below poverty line? If giving to all, why give to very rich 'ladlis'?

Instead give some amount to poor 'ladlas' also.
