CM seeks report on cop suspension for quizzing journo

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has sought details about suspension of a Constable, who was reportedly suspended for asking a Delhi journalist to show his identity card when he was found walking on Miramar beach at midnight with a girl.

The constable was reportedly suspended after the Delhi journalist called up a top bureaucrat, who directed the police department to suspend the cop.

The Constable questioned the journalist, who is in his mid-50s, when he spotted him with a young girl on Miramar beach at midnight last week and asked him to show his ID.

In spite of being on off duty, the police constable questioned a person movin on the beach at midnight and then informed the Police Control Room (PCR) about the couple.

"I have read media reports which claimed that he was suspended for asking ID proof of a journalist. I will seek details about the suspension," Parrikar, also the home minister, said today.

He suggested that the policeman could petition him (the CM), if he thinks injustice has been done to him.

Sources close to the Constable said he was only following the State Government's advice to policemen that they should be vigilant even if they are off-duty.

Suspended for such a good act while off duty? He should have been appreciated for the good work and awarded a certificate/citation for what he has done.

Chief Minister may kindly look into this. There could be more such cases.
