Written Konkani exam was just an idea: CM

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar has said that conducting written examination in Konkani only for the students studied in English medium at primary level, for government jobs, is just an idea.

“It was just an idea. I don’t know why there was so much criticism”, he said at a cabinet briefing yesterday.

Parrikar, in an interview on Prudent TV, had said that he would make written examination in Konkani  or Marathi compulsory only for the candidates who have studied in English medium at primary level.

Ideating his plans, he had also said such an examination won’t be necessary for the candidates who have studied in Konkani or Marathi medium at primary level.

Parrikar was later criticized in political circles as well as by the media for mixing up medium of instruction issue with recruitment rules of the government.

Goa government has made knowledge of Konkani essential, and Marathi only desirable, for all the candidates applying for government jobs, in order to ascertain that the candidates are basically Goans.

“I will take a right decision in this regard when time comes”, he said, but did not elaborate further.

Meanwhile, CM informed that he has given permission to total 23 Konkani and Marathi primary schools this year.

“Only six to seven among them are Konkani; the rest are Marathi medium schools”, he said.

Parrikar has also announced KTC bus service to all the government schools from 15 August.

“They will not own the bus, but the service provided by the KTC”, he said.

Written test in Konkani was just an idea. Giving grants to English was just an administrative decision. What is coming next ?
