CM urges centre to strengthen security of tourist state

Goa government has called for a better cooperation from the Centre to strengthen its security mechanism in the state, which has a huge tourist inflow, a state spokesman said here today.
State chief minister Manohar Parrikar, while participating in the internal security meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the national capital today, said that the state should be supported to initiate better security in view of the tourist inflow.
Parrikar also called for police reforms to tackle the situation, reads the handout by the State Information and Publicity Department.
The meeting, which was attended by Home Minister P Chidambaram and state chief ministers, discussed in detail the situation in all the states and deliberated upon internal security situation.
During the meeting, Parrikar informed them that there is a communal harmony in Goa and there is a need for technological innovation to tackle security issues, especially because a number of foreign tourists visit the state.
Parrikar also asked the Centre to sanction another IRB battalion for Goa, the press release adds.
He also emphasised that there is a need for a proper electronic surveillance in the entire state.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that police modernisation is necessary to deal with situation including that of fake currency.
The meeting discussed other issues like intelligence collection system, procurement of arms and ammunition and crime and criminal tracking network system.
Besides Parrikar, Goa Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, who is also the Home secretary, attended the meeting.
