Govt asks Admin to monitor mining safety

Goa Government has asked the district administration officials to begin monitoring the mining sites from the safety angle ahead of the monsoon.

District Collector Mihir Vardhan, said committees, led by sub-divisional magistrates, will ensure that all safety precautions are in place at these sites, which are prone to accidents after a heavy downpour.

After three mining disasters in the last monsoon, the monitoring committee, headed by the District Collector, was formed by the State Government, which had representatives of the Indian Bureau of Mines, the State Mines and Geology Department, Mines Safety and other agencies.

Vardhan said the inspection of mines will begin from April 1 and will continue for one-and-a-half months till May 15.

The Mines and Geology Department will take action against mining sites that do not adhere to the precautions, he said.

Three people had died and several injured in three mining mishaps in the last rainy season. Mulgao village was inundated, after the pond stocking water on the mining site breached in July 2011.
