Mining industry awaiting Shah Commission outcome

The mining industry in Goa is on tenterhooks following the submission of a report on illegal mining in the state by Justice M B Shah Commission.
One of its recommendations is that export of iron ore from the coastal state be banned completely.
Goa Mineral Ore Exporters Association Secretary, Glenn Kalavampara, said the issues raised by the Commission were mostly "technical".
The report was submitted yesterday to the Centre.The earlier interim report had favoured ban on exports.
"Mines Ministry is in the know of the ground-level situation. But even if it wants clarifications, we are ready to provide," Kalavampara said.
He added that Association had asked for the audience with Shah Commission, but it was not given till end.
"It will be too premature to comment on Shah Commission report as what we have learnt is only through media," he added.
Goa government officials said they were yet to receive the copy of the report.
State Mines and Geology Department director, Arvind Lolienkar, said the Union Mines Ministry would refer it to the state for clarifications.
"They will send us the report and only then we will be able to comment."
In the past, people dependent on mining industry have protested after Shah Commission recommended a complete ban on the ore exports from Goa in its interim report.
BJP-led government in the state too has opposed a ban, favouring a cap instead.
