10 Maharashtra police detained for illegally smuggling Goa liquor

Goa Police and excise department officials last night detained 10 personnel of neighbouring Maharashtra Police for allegedly trying to smuggle liquor worth Rs one lakh out of the coastal state.

Goa Police stated that 45 cartons of 12 bottles each were found in the truck by which the Maharashtra cops were travelling.

Those detained, all constables attached to a Navi Mumbai police station, arrived in Goa as escort for the truck which carried cash of Reserve Bank of India, to be delivered to State Bank of India, Panaji branch, here.

A senior official from Pernem police station stated that bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor were seized from them.

The Maharashtra police constables even tried to assault the Goa policemen when questioned about the liquor, they said.

Excise department sources stated that the accused had picked up the bottles from Panaji without paying the vendor.

"The vendor tipped off the excise department about this, who alerted the police from Pernem police station," an official stated.
