3 parameters probed, 7 still left of Illegal mining

The Justice M B Shah Commission, which is probing the illegal mining scam in Goa, has said that out of the ten different parameters, based on which, an extensive probe is being carried out, they have been able to deal with three parameters so far.

Senior member of the Commission U V Singh told reporters here that data is being collected from various government departments.

"We have to collect the data from many departments...Some has been collected, while some other is still being collected," Singh said.

He said that out of the ten parameters, which are being checked as a part of the enquiry, only three parameters have been completed so far.

"We will have to sit with the data and analyse it. We have experts from relevant fields on our team, who will be giving their observations," Singh said.

Responding to his meeting with former chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Manohar Parrikar, Singh said, "He (Parrikar) has given certain documents. Being the former PAC chairman, the documents given by him has a relevance."

Singh said that the investigations in Goa have forced them to understand Portuguese-era laws, which are unique to the state.

"We are going through 10 different laws, which are applicable in the state," he said, adding that some things like communidade lands (community lands) are also being studied as a part of the probe.

"We have to study these lands, as mining on them is illegal," he said, adding that the final report will also consider the social aspect of the state.

"Like environment, we will also consider the social aspects like communidade lands and other issues," he added.

The Shah Commission has begun inquiry into Goa''s illegal mining trade since September, this year and is expected to give its report by the end of this month or early next month.
