No 'spurious' business with liquor any more

Those tourists intending to booze in Goa during the vacations can now do it without fear of having consumed spurious liquor.

Just ensure that there is hologram on the bottle of the liquor, that you have purchased.

State Excise department has decided to soon introduce hologram on the liquor bottles manufactured in Goa, which would certify their genuiness.

Excise Commissioner P S Reddy said that such a measure has been put in place to make sure that the tourists are not sold spurious or adulterated liquor.

“Holograms will be multicolour seals, which will be temper proof and will be pasted on the bottle at the manufacturing facility,” he explained.

“If you remove the hologram it will be denigrated into pieces,” Reddy said.

The state government, which has invited tenders for hologram manufacturing, has already sent the samples to IIT Delhi to check the quality of labels.

Goa attracts around 24 lakh visitors every year and non-expensive liquor availability makes the state a favourite destination for the liquor consumption.

Reddy said that the state manufactures around 3 lakh boxes of liquor every month, of which only 50 per cent is consumed locally while rest is exported to outside states.

“Locally, most of the liquor sale is through restaurants and for tourists,” he said.

After being hit by excise scam, which resulted in loss of revenue, the state government has already introduced multi colour coded permits. The department has also fixed validity for the permits.

“Colour of the permit changes every month so that no one can duplicate them,” Reddy said.

The department is also producing monthly statement of import and export of liquor and it is cross checked with the states where the consignments are sent, he added.
