"Nustem" shoots up in Goa

With fish prices skyrocketing overnight, Chicken has come as a big rescuer for the meat-eating Goans, who break their `veggie avatar' after completion of one month long Shravan month of Hindu Calender and Ganesh Chaturthi celebration.

A close watch at the fish markets revealed that the prices of fish have soared ten times since yesterday, when one and half day long Ganesh Chaturthi celebration ended and people thronged to have fish on their palate.

"A portion of prawns which was costing Rs 100 and enough for family of four is now costing Rs 1,000," an aggrieved consumer said.

He prefers to buy a chicken rather than going for costly fish. We can wait for couple of days to stabilise the prices, he said.

"Due to gusty weather, trawlers are not venturing in the Sea. We have to depend on the traditional fishermen, affecting supply," Edwin Godinho, wholesaler at Panaji market, said.

Torrential rains that have hit the Konkan and Goa region has hit fishing trawlers.

"All trawlers are at the jetty. We can't go off shore because there is a warning of gusty wind," said Menino Afonso, Chairman, Mandovi Fishermen's Cooperative Society.

The society has around 300 trawlers under its umbrella and all have been anchored at the Malim jetty.
