Goa OBC to get 27% quota by mid-Nov

The Other Backward Classes of Goa are exepected to get reservation of 27 per cent by the first fortnight of November this year.
During the cabinet briefing, social welfare minister Mhadev Naik said the survey of the 19 OBC communities of Goa has been completed, comprising of 50,000 families.
Though name-wise rolls of all the OBC people have been prepared, Naik declined to provide exact number of OBC population in Goa.
“We will display the rolls in each taluka for scrutiny between 1 to 20 September and objections would be invited between 25 Setpember to 6 October”, he said.
The OBC Commission would then finalise the rolls by 31 October, after which the cabinet is expected to take a formal decision on giving 27 per cent reservation, by 15 November, said Naik.
Goans belonging to OBC communities, residing before 1968, would get the benefit of these reservations.
The issue has been lingering due to non-completion of a proper survey, directed by the high court.
The matter also got complicated further after three communities – Gawada, Kunbi and Velip – were shifted to Scheduled Tribe, providing them 12 per cent reservation.
The OBC community list however would not include Gomantak Maratha Samaj (originally Devdasi community) as members of this community have offered not to be included in the list for the purpose of reservation.
This is perhaps the only community in India that has offered to opt out from reservations, after it struggled through from pre-liberation time to get themselves educated and prosper.
On the eve of Lok Sabha election, the issue of OBC reservation is getting heated up with Bhandari community, largest among the OBCs threatening the government to face consequences.
Ruling BJP MLA Vishnu Wagh has been spearheading the threats while BJP’s North Goa MP Shripad Naik and Congress leader Ravi Naik have also been endorsing it.
One such convention, held last week, had once again threatened the government to face consequences if 27 per cent reservation is not implemented.
“We have completed the work which the erstwhile Congress government could not do in last five years”, claimed Naik, who also belongs to the Bhandari Samaj among the OBC.
