Not even Rs 10,000 to mine-affected farmer

No farmer will get, on an average, even Rs 10,000 as a compensation for the loss occurred to his ‘livelihood’ – the paddy fields – due to excessive mining.

As per the information supplied by chief minister Manohar Parrikar, 892 farmers got affected due to mining in last three years.

The area of paddy fields assessed is around 200 hectares.

But the total compensation, which has not been paid till date, is estimated at around Rs 79.42 lakh.

This, on an average, amounts to hardly Rs 8904.

Replying to unstarred question raised by Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardesai, Parrikar – also the agriculture minister – has even admitted that no detailed study has been conducted so far to asses in what manner the farmers have been affected due to mining.

He however admits that there has been depletion and reduction of water, siltation of the fields due to erosion during monsoons, compaction of fields and deposition of mineral dust on the crops.

The only survey conducted is to assess the losses, says the chief minister.

The recommended compensation is as follows:
