Justice Shah Commsn begins probe into mining

The Justice M B Shah Commission that arrived in Goa on Tuesday, has begun inquiry into the alleged illegal mining and encroachment by mine owners in Goa.

The nine-member Commission held a series of meetings with officials of various departments including Revenue, Mines and Geology and Forests yesterday.

Eight different teams have been formed, with each given a list of 12 mines for the inquiry.

These teams would inspect the mines. Goa has 90-odd operating mines that extract around 54 million metric tones of ore annually.

Karnataka's Chief Conservator of Forests U V Singh is heading the inquiry panel that is expected to inspect the mining sites and probe the matter over the next 20 days.

Besides the illegal extraction of ore, the commission will also probe encroachment by the mining firms.

"We will also see whether the mining firms have encroached upon any additional land other than the mining leases," a senior official told PTI today.

He said that even those mining firms that illegally hold additional land, but not extract ore from there, would be inspected and probed. Goa is the biggest exporter of Iron Ore in the country.

Good to see the investigations being carried under the supervision of competent Officials and Hon. Justice Shah. The investigating team will get lot of material which could keep them busy for quite some time.

A beautiful small State like Goa being exploited so ruthlessly with indiscriminate extraction of ore and in the process causing irreversible harm to it's water resources, forest wealth, environments, ground water, infrastructure, road network, and causing hazards to the health of the people needs to be reviewed. The effect of the ore on the surrounding fertile lands, making them barren and the river beds becoming all shallow due to deposits of the ore also will attract attention of one and all. It is reported that over 50.000 trees have been cut in the last few years and scores of people died in road accidents.

The worst part is the meagre amount of about 550 crores against the turnover of around 36,000 crores looks ridiculous considering the irreversible damage that this operation is causing to the State and it's masses. The problem of inflow of migrant labour is another problem which will cause heavy burden on the future generations of this State...Good to see the team going into the whole issue which will go a long way in protecting and preserving Goa for it's future generations...
