Assolna tense over funeral through disputed pathway

Villagers make a new pathway for funeral

Assolna today witnessed a scene of blocking a funeral over property dispute as situation became tense over the issue.

The Baifol ward of Assolna was tense for about three hours as Joao family restricted the funeral cortege of 81 year old Elsina Paes being taken to her house before the final rites.

As per the information, 81-year old Elsina Paes died in Mumbai and her corpse was brought to her native house in Baifol Assolna today morning.

The Joao family however objected to the corpse being taken to the native house of Paes from the pathway, passing through their property.

A litigation is going on between both the families over the pathway for over 20 years in various courts in Goa.

As tension built up, the villagers gathered and requested Joao sisters to allow the corpse to be taken to the native house.

Sarpanch of Assolna Pramila Almeida & ward panch Pedrina Cardoz also arrived at the spot and requested, but all in vein.

The police, who arrived at the scene, preferred an amicable settlement rather than allowing the corpse.

"It was sad that Joao family made an issue during the funeral. No body from the ward had ever interfered with both the families as there was civil dispute over the pathway." said Pramila Almeida, sarpanch of Assolna.
