Churchill's bail rejected, along with Wachasundar; Mohanty out

Bail applications of former PWD minister Churchill Alemao and A M Wachasundar have been rejected by Goa’s special court dealing with corruption cases.

The special court, headed by judge B P Deshpande, however granted conditional bail to Satyakam Mohanty, former vice president of Louis Berger (India), a US-based consultancy firm.

Alemao has been charged as a ‘main co-conspirator’, along with former chief minister Digambar Kamat, in the Louis Berger bribery case.

The court will give order on Kamat’s anticipatory bail application on Wednesday, 19^th August.

Mohanty has been granted a conditional bail with a security of Rs one lakh.

Alemao was arrested little before midnight on 5^th August and was then remanded to seven-day judicial custody on 13^th August.

Till then, he was in the police custody. He is presently locked up at Colvale sub-jail.

Wachasundar was the first arrest in the case on 27^th July, after registering FIR in the bribery case on 21 July. He is also presently serving the judicial custody.

Mohanty was arrested on 3^rd August and was then remanded to 14-day judicial custody on 7^th August.

Kamat, who is charged as the main conspirator in the case is the only person presently out with an interim relief granted by the court, till his anticipatory bail is heard.

Both Kamat and Alemao are facing a serious charge of accepting huge amount of bribe from Louis Berger International Inc., the US-based consultancy firm.

The firm has admitted before the Department of Justice in New Jersey of paying bribes of total Rs six crore to ‘a’ minister and government officials in Goa to get the consultancy contract of JICA project.

Louis Berger was selected for consultancy to implement the project, worth Rs 1031 crore, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
