GSPCB directs 32 hotels for waste disposal plants

Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued directions to 32 starred hotels, including five star properties, to immediately install bio-degradable waste disposal plant, failing which action would be taken against them.

The notices were issued under Municipal Solid waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, when it was pointed out that the hotels ask the piggeries to take over the surplus food, creating nuisance for the people living near the piggeries, GSPCB chairman Jose Manual Noronha told reporters here Wednesday.

The board had inspected several piggeries and decided to cut down the problem at its source, which are starred hotels, Noronha said.

The hotels were also asking the piggery owners to carry other scrap material along with the food which were found piled up alongside the piggeries, raising health issues, he said.

The board had inspected 56 starred hotels across Goa, of which 32 were found to be violating the rules.

The consent granted to various hotels under Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, specifies that "the applicant should install facility for converting bio degradable waste generated from the hotel to compost so as to meet the standards of compost prescribed in the municipal solid waste (management and handling) rules, 2000."

The GSPCB, in the directions issued today, has asked the hotels to immediately ensure that all the bio-degradable waste generated by the unit should be composted.

"Immediately stop the disposal of bio-degradable waste generated by hotels to piggeries," the directions mention.
