60 beach shacks blacklisted

The Goa tourism ministry has decided to blacklist around 60 beach shacks which failed to dismantle their structures despite directions from the government.

State tourism minister Dilip Parulekar told reporters today that there are around 60 shacks, mostly on private properties, which either continue to be in business or have failed to dismantle their structures.

He claimed that none of these shacks are on properties owned by the Goa tourism department.

While giving annual licences to shacks, the Goa tourism department adds a rider that they would have to discontinue business by May 31, which heralds the lean tourist season in the state.

Around 1000 odd shack licences are given across the 105 km long coastal belt of the state.

Parulekar said that the Goa tourism department had surveyed the beaches and realised that there are around 60 shacks which failed to abide by its directives.

"We have decided to blacklist these shack owners and disallow them continuing the business during the next season," the minister said.
