Now dress code at Old Goa churches

After two temples in Goa banned "indecently dressed" visitors, Goa's famous church is also following their suit.

A special panel at the state's most famous church, Basilica of Bom Jesus, at Old Goa will screen pilgrims and tourists for proper dress from September.

In case the visitors are found scantily or improperly dressed, they will be provided with shawls to cover themselves up, Father Savio Barrette, rector of the Basilica, said.

"The panel of specially-appointed officials will screen them," he said.

These shawls, he added, will have to be returned after the visit.

The 16th century church has been receiving complaints from parishioners who raised objections about the "ill-dressed" tourists and against those who created nuisance during the Holy Masses.

The Mahalsa temple at Mardoll in Ponda taluka has already banned entry to foreigners while few other temples have imposed dress code on visitors.

Mike from UK....1) It isn't the govt that's imposed this dress code, its the priests from the Basilica that have.

2)Tourist traffic especially from East and Northern Europe is increasing year on year (what last 'torists'?) and

3) You really should learn to spell simple words like 'tourists' - helps when you trying to make a point...
