Blacklisting visas preferred than deportation: CM

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar today said that blacklisting the visas could act as a deterrent against the illegal activities of foreign nationals staying in the coastal state.

Responding to a calling attention motion, Parrikar said in the Legislative Assembly that deportation of the foreigners found to be involved in illegal activities was not easy.

"It is easy to demand that the foreigners be deported. But it is not easy to deport them. The solution is blacklisting their visas," said Parrikar.

The issue was raised by BJP MLA Michael Lobo, who said that illegal activities of foreign nationals, who commonly get into businesses such as restaurants, private shacks, tourist guides, etc., had made the local people apprehensive.

The Chief Minister admitted that police have enough laws giving them powers to crack down on such activities, but they fail to act.

"I admit that the police are not taking action," he said, adding that a permanent squad would be formed, which would be directly under the control of the Chief Minister and the tourism minister, and it would take action against the foreign nationals who violate the visa conditions.
