Catching red handed not enough to nail down corrupt: SC

 

A judgement by the Supreme Court to nail down bribery cases may change the whole dimension of at least three high profile bribery cases Goa is presently probing.

The apex court of the country said that merely catching a person red handed while accepting bribe or recovery of the money is not enough to prove the charge.

The Supreme Court has said it is equally important to prove that the accused had demanded a bribe as well as that the accepted the bribe voluntarily.

Goa is presently rocking with Louis Berger bribery case, involving two political heavyweights – former Congress chief minister Digambar Kamat and former PWD minister Churchill Alemao.

The second bribery case involves brother-in-law of present BJP chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar, who was caught red handed while accepting a bribe to strike a deal for industrial plot.

In a third case, office peon of transport director was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs one lakh. As a result, presently, transport director Arun Desai is transferred.
