‘Aframent’ cultivators to be owners of the land

After 100 years, Goan cultivators would be owners of the land they have been cultivating as Aframent.

BJP government has decided to hand over ownership of this land, which was given to the farmers in 1917 during Portuguese regime, allowing them to purchase it at a minimal rate.

“This is optional. You may also decide to continue in the same fashion if you wish  to”, said Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar at the cabinet briefing  today.

He said the government land is today earmarked as Class II, where the cultivator has a possession of the land but not the ownership.

However, the government has now decided to push them into Class I, where the cultivator would be the owner of the land.

He said many Aframent holders are also in the process of either transfer of land, leasing out the land or selling it while government gets nothing from it.

CM however frankly admitted that the government has no records available readymade about such cultivators.

The rates decided to purchase differ in municipal and panchayat areas. It would be as follows:

Muncipalities:

Class A: Rs 150/- per sq mts.

Class B: Rs 100/- per sq mts.

Class C: Rs 80/- per sq mts.

Panchayats:

Class A: Rs 75/- per sq mts.

Class B: Rs 65/- per sq mts.

Class C: Rs 50/- per sq mts.
