GCA’s Balu, Chetan, Akbar arrested for multi-crore fraud charges

Goa police today evening arrested three top office bearers of the Goa Cricket Association, facing charges of a fraud to the tune of Rs 3.13 crore.

GCA president Chetan Desai, secretary Vinod Fadke and treasurer Akbar Mulla were today arrested by the economic offences cell of Goa police.

The police had registered an FIR about the multi-crore fraud on 6th June, based on a complaint filed by GCA life member Vilas Desai.

Desai had cited two frauds committed by Fadke, Chetan and Akbar.

One was TV subsidy scam of Rs 2.87 crore, which was also presented before the Lodha Commission by Goa’s former Ranaji cricketer Hemant Angle.

As per the complaint, the GCA had received a cheque for TV subsidy from the BCCI in October 2006.

The trio allegedly opened a fake GCA account in a private bank and deposited this cheque in April 2007.

The whole amount was withdrawn till March 2008 by many unknown persons, in several instalments.

The second fraud cited by Vilas Desai is a cheque issued by Chetan Desai as the secretary and Akbar Mulla as the treasurer in 2008, when Dayanand Narvekar was the president.

The bearer cheque of Rs 26 lakh was issued in the name of S Rajshekhar, but was encashed by one Sameer.

Interestingly the cash book entry of the GCA showed this cheque issued to Hako Enterprises, who never received the amount.

Desai has alleged it as yet another scam by the trio.

The issue of frauds is heating up, due to which hundreds of GCA members had marched to the GCA office to attend the emergency special general body meeting convened on 12th June.

However, Fadke and his group prohibited their entry and adjourned the meeting without discussing the issue of malpractices.

Later, Fadke-supporting Clubs had a meeting and appointed an investigation committee under the chairmanship of Dr Baban Parulekar to probe into the allegations of frauds and malpractices.

A fresh allegation of land scandal was made at this meeting against Vilas Desai.

Before the committee could begin its work, the police have now arrested the trio.
