Valpoi records 84% polling

 

Valpoi bye-election recorded five per cent more turnout than last polling at the general Assembly poll held in 2007.

It was around 84 per cent this time, compared to 79 per cent polling recorded last time.

Both – Congress candidate and health minister Vishwajeet Rane as well as BJP candidate Santosh Haldankar have claimed to get victorious.

The counting is on 21 October.

Total 14,881 voters out of 17,920 voters voted at the Valpoi bye-poll.

 Murmune booth recorded the highest 93 per cent while 5A booth of Valpoi town recorded the lowest 64 per cent.

Interestingly, people came out to vote in spite of heavy rains hitting the whole Sattari taluka today since morning.Webcam cross-checking voter's identity

For the first time, help centers were installed at the polling venue by the Election Commission.

Similarly all the precautions were taken to avoid bogus voting. Webcams were used to click photos before voting to cross-check their identity.  

Another interesting observation was that people from the town prioritised issues of development and unemployment. Lots of villagers however expressed concern over increasing menace of mining.
