SA should demand curbing mono-culturism, demands Mauzo

India’s eminent Konkani writer Damodar Mauzo, active at the Sahitya Academy, has demanded that the premier literary body of the country should urge the government to adopt stringent measures to curb the moral policing by the protagonists of mono-culturism.

In a letter written to Sahitya Academy president Vishwanath Pratap Tiwari, Mauzo has also demanded that Sahitya Academy needs to send a strong message to those in power that this writers’ body will not tolerate any threat to their freedom.

“Sahitya Academy, a body of eminent writers as she is, cannot remain silent on the issues pertaining to the scuttling of Freedom of Expression”, said Mauzo.

He has been a member of the executive board, general council member as well as the finance committee member.

“I sincerely feel that following the assassination of Prof M M Kalburgi, Sahitya Academy should either have come out with a strong condemnation over the killing or should have convened an emergency EB meeting to assess the situation wherein the life of writers is threatened by the fundamentalist forces,” said Mauzo.

Though belated, he feels happy that the Academy has finally convened an EB meeting.

“I strongly feel that the Executive Committee has to come out expressing its serious concern over the prevailing threat to the creativity of the free thinking writers and the rising rate of intolerance in the country,” says Mauzo.

He has also reminded the Academy of its duty to safeguard the interests of the writers’ community and also ensure safety to the lives of its members.

Congress is really cunning. Their A team was badly bruised and crushed both at centre and states. Their B team has problem in salvaging their loot being confiscated. Now they are creating team C of gentlemen and unsuspected literary people. Will these people realise this dirty trick? If they would not then pity.

Good suggestion. SA should also deplore jailing, raids, stiffling of democratic voice that took place during emergency. This will give credibility to dissenters. Else they would appear like Team C of congress who are now pulling the strings from behind such protests drama as they do not have honourable place in India.
