Political drama to shift to Mumbai

The political drama shifts to Mumbai as the G7 continues to mount pressure on chief minister Digambar Kamat to seek apology from his Congress leaders, failing which they have threatened to topple the coalition government on finance bills.

A joint meeting of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party's high command observers is expected to take place in Mumbai tomorrow, to resolve the issue, on the eve of the Assembly session beginning on Monday.

Goa PCC chief Subhash Shirodkar has confirmed that he and the chief minister have been summoned to Mumbai. However, he did not elaborate.

Meanwhile, the NCP local executive committee authorized their three legislators to take any decision, if the Congress leaders fail to apologise.

Similar authorization has been given by the MGP executive committee to their two members.

They have objected to the statements made against the NCP by PWD minister Churchill Alemao and deputy speaker Mauvin Godinho.

The G7 has threatened not to support finance bills during the Assembly session.

The session would begin with the Governor's address on Monday, following which the finance bill on supplementary demands is expected to be presented on Tuesday.

Chief minister Kamat would present the budget on Thursday, 25 March, following which he would seek vote on accounts through yet another finance bill.

If he cannot get majority votes on these bills, the government would automatically fall.

Shirodkar personally feels that the high command of both the alliance partners - the Congress and the NCP - should find a final solution on this internal infighting.

No minister is likely to quit, on principles or on moral grounds, whatever may be the issue! The common man feels that the bargaining is only to get more leverage, more power and higher chunk of funds to spend so that they can ensure their own welfare and the welfare of the coterie who elects them!
