JKS to approach SC to recognise all 5 scripts of Konkani

Jagotik Konkani Songhotton has decided to challenge the Karnataka high court decision in the Supreme Court and demand that the central Sahitya Academy recognises all the five scripts of Konkani.

A decision in this regard was taken at the JKS conference held in Mangalore on 13 March, attended by 75 delegates and chaired by its president Sidhanath Buyao.

A petition filed by Ozario in this regard was dismissed by the Karnataka high court recently.

A press note issued in this regard by secretary general Ozario stated that the JKS would approach the apex court to direct Kendiry Sahitya Akademi to recognise all the five scripts – Devnagari, Romi, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu – for awards, projects, assignments and grants etc.

The JKS would also ask the Supreme Court to direct India’s premier literary institution to reconstitute the advisory board of Konkani, alleging that it has been fully captured by the Devnagari lobby.

The JKS has also resolved to launch a campaign to pressurise Goa government to include Romi script in the state official language.

Ozario said the JKS would take up all other measures like protests, boycott, exposure etc to “put an end to the fascist lipi policy of imposition and discrimination.”

The conference also delved deep into 25 questions on the politics of imposition of Devnagari on Konkani and the damage done to Konkani literature, Konkani unity and Konkani language and its future, as a result of this unjust policy and practice, states the press note.
