GUJ condemns attack on journos in Delhi

Goa Union of Journalists has condemned attack on journalists by a group of people, who called themselves lawyers, in Delhi yesterday while covering the JNU student leader’s case.

Following is the statement GUJ president Sadguru Patil released today:

The Goa Union of Journalists expresses solidarity with the journalists in New Delhi who were roughed up by lawyers and others while they were covering the case of Kanhaiya Kumar, who was to be produced before the court charged with sedition.

The manner in which the lawyers and others took the law into their own hands deserves to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

GUJ believes that attacking journalists and damaging their equipment is nothing but an attempt to silence the media with the use of brute force by rowdy elements, who made up the attacking groups.

Journalists are on duty to cover the event irrespective of the circumstances, a profession made more dangerous by incidents like that of the Patiala Court house.

GUJ also condemns the statements of Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi for calling the brutal attack a 'minor incident.' Never can an attack on journalists in the field be considered 'minor'.
