‘Court’ out, but ‘Nachom-ia’ still in Oscars race in 2 categories
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 04 January 2016 19:17 IST‘Court’, the official entry of a Marathi film is out from the race for Oscar awards. But Konkani film ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ is still in the race in two categories.
The results of both the categories – Best Original Score and Best Film – would be announced on 14 January.
Organisers of Academy awards have already announced results of Best Foreign Film, choosing seven best films, in which no Indian film figures.
‘Court’, the official entry of Government of India, was in the Foreign Film category.
‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’, the Konkani film directed by Bardroy Barreto, is one among the 112 shortlisted as eligible feature-length motion pictures for its Background Music, which is called the Original Score at Oscars.
Ronnie Monsorate, the composer of ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’, is now competing with 111 films from all over the world in the category.
‘Jalam’, the Malayalam film and its composer Ouesppachan is also competing in the same category.
“A Reminder List of works submitted in the Original Score category will be made available with a nominations ballot to all members of the Music Branch, who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements”, states Oscars website (click here).
JUDGES ADD ‘NACHOM-IA’ FOR BEST FILM
There is also more to be proud of for the Konkani people from all over the world as ‘Nachom-ia’ has been selected in yet another category for the Oscars –the Best Film.
“There were originally 305 films entries in this category and our film was included later by the judges among the 11 more films they found eligible,” Barreto told goanews.com.
Though ‘Court’ did not figure in this category, three more Indian films are also found eligible in the category – Jalam (Malayalam), Hemalkasa (Hindi) and Rangi Taranga (Kannada).
The final list of nominations of this category would also be announced on 14 January at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, states the Oscars website (click here).
Barreto however informed that their entry also for the Best Song was rejected by the Oscar, perhaps because all the songs are old, composed by Chris Perry and most of them sung by Lorna decades ago.
‘Jalam’ however has found a place also in this category with four songs.
This is the first time in the history, a Konkani cinema has been chosen for the World’s biggest award for films –the Oscars.
The final results of the 88th Academy awards would be announced on Sunday, 28 February.
