Afghani films seek neighbour's assistance

The half century-old film industry of violence prone Afghanistan needs financial assistance from their neighbours to produce films, a senior Afghani filmmaker said today.

"Afghanistan film industry does not have money to make the big films. We need financial assistance and we are looking at friendly neighbouring countries to make good cinema," Hamayoun Paiz, an Afghani filmmaker told reporters here.

He said that the trend of European filmmakers shooting in the country has also ceased after the war.

"Till two years back, European films were shot in Afghanistan. We had four to five feature films from France but that has now stopped," the filmmaker said.

Paiz was also critical of filmmakers, who made movies highlighting the negatives in Afghanistan.

"Films should be used to show the good things about Afghanistan rather than showcasing all bad elements in the country," he said.

Paiz said the Afghan film industry produces about six feature films annually, while the rest were short films.

"Hindi, Pakistani and Iranian films are shown in the local theatres of our country," he added.

Paiz's 30-minute short film 'I want a Horse not a wife' was screened at South Asian Film Festival (SAFF), currently underway in Goa. Afghanistan is the country in focus for SAFF 2010, which was inaugurated on Thursday.
