Goa airport shut down till afternoon as Jet flight skids off runway
HIRU MAHALE, VASCO | 27 December 2016 08:55 ISTGoa airport has been closed till afternoon as Jet Airways flight veered off the runway at 5.30 am today morning.
Around 20 passengers out of total 161 on board sustained minor injuries.
The incident occurred at Dabolim airport while Goa-Mumbai Jet Airways flight 9W 2374 was taking off for Mumbai at 5.30 am.
Due to technical glitches, as told, the flight suddenly went off the runway and drifted towards the compound wall, creating panic among 154 passengers and a crew of 7 staffers.
The emergency doors were also opened for the safe exit of passengers, but some sustained minor injuries while jumping out in panic.
The injured passengers were immediately shifted to the Chicalim cottage hospital in Vasco city.
"All guests and crew have been safely evacuated. Few guests have sustained injuries during the evacuation process. Medical assistance is being coordinated to those injured by the Jet Airways team and the airport authorities," stated Jet Airways.
Meanwhile, the port authorities decided to shut down the airport till 12.30 pm to assess the whole runway.
Due to this, all flights coming to Goa and leaving for other destinations have been rescheduled.
