Goa now plans a Birds Festival
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 19 April 2016 20:29 ISTGoa is planning to hold Birds Festival in the tourist state.
The idea is floated by Forest Minister Rajendra Arlekar.
The picturesque state of Goa, also known for its greenery, is rich with around 460 species of birds, including the migratory birds.
The state also has Dr Salim Ali Birds Sanctuary at Chorao, an island adjacent to the capital city of Panaji, on the banks of Mandovi River.
The sanctuary itself has around 110 species of different birds, informed Arlekar.
He is planning to hold the festival, at least in three places in Goa, in the month of October or November, after monsoons.
Prior to this, said Arlekar, the forest department would make documentation of all the birds found in the tourist state, from the coastline to the Sahyadri range of forests.
He also plans to prepare a directory of bird watchers and bird lovers in the state, who could help make the festival a success.
“The Birds Festival can be yet another major attraction at national and international level”, said the BJP minister.
He was speaking after inaugurating Indo-German biodiversity programme of coastal and marine protected areas at the birds’ sanctuary.
