Digambar-Vijai alliance in Margao council only up to Assembly poll

The ruling alliance in Margao municipality between Congress MLA Digambar Kamat and independent MLA Vijai Sardesai will continue only up to the next Assembly election.

At a joint press conference of both the groups, Kamat replied to a question, clarifying that the present arrangement will be reviewed after the Assembly election.

He however avoided a reply, when media persons asked him why it is not for the full term of five years. Sardesai also preferred to keep mum.

Total 18 councillors of 25, belonging to both the groups, met today morning to formally elect Dr Babita Angle Prabhudesai for the post of the chairperson and Dorris Taxeira for the vice chairperson.

Sardesai said he has written to Director of Municipal Administration, seeking permission to take oath at Lohia Maidan, while also appealing opposition councillors to join the public event.

DARE TO TOPPLE

Sardesai also challenged the BJP government to topple his council.

The question came up when Kamat said the toppling games in Margao municipality started after new BJP government came to power.

“Margao had a stable council till I was the chief minister. Toppling started during the BJP regime”, he said.

When journalists pointed out that the BJP regime in Goa still continues, Sardesai dared the BJP government to topple the council.

BJP has won only four wards, that too in Margao (total 11 wards) and Curtorim Assembly constituencies (3 wards) as Sardesai panel swept Fatorda constituency by winning all 11 wards.

The rest three are independents while one independent from Curtorim constituency has joined Sardesai group.

MMC WORKERS STRIKE

Even before new council takes over the reins, the ruling group had to face a flash strike by Margao municipal workers today.

They stopped work in protest of non-payment of overtime arrears, pending for the last four months.

Sardesai, along with the newly elected councillors, rushed to the municipality and assured them to resolve the issue soon after they take over on 5 November.
