Margao council to have Women leaders; Babita CP, Dorris VCP

Margao municipality will have Dr Babita Angle Prabhudesai as the chairperson and Dorris Taxeira as the vice chairperson.
They would be formally elected on 5 November, the oath-taking date decided by the Director of Municipal Administration.
Fatorda independent MLA Vijai Sardesai’s group today unanimously elected Angle Prabhudesai as the leader of their 12 councillors-elect.
Similarly, the group of six councillors-elect belonging to Margao Congress MLA Digambar Kamat elected Taxeira as the leader of the group.
Margao, by law, needs to have a lady chairperson, but no such compulsion for a vice chairperson.
“We are going for total women empowerment”, said Sardesai, while presenting all the 12 councillors-elect before the media.
He has also decided that the oath-taking ceremony be held at the historic Lohia Maidan.
While electing both the women to head the council, Vijai-Digambar combine has also worked out a Hindu-Christian formula, in an attempt to create a positive impression among Madganvkar.
