Goa to have another newspaper & 3 periodicals

Goa's media canvas has four important newspaper-magazine releases lined up over next two months, including a Marathi edition of the state's oldest newspaper - – Herald.

A mining group – Fomento Resources - is planning a tabloid size news weekly.  

Herald Publications Private Limited, the century-old newspaper company, is foraying into a Marathi newspaper, a travel magazine and weekly newsmagazine.

All launches, except travel magazine, are scheduled in August, this year.

Sujoy Gupta, Editor of the news magazine, owned by Fomento Resources, said the venture will look into issues that are nearer to the heart of Goans.

Gupta, who had stint in Herald's English edition before moving for the latest venture, said the news weekly will also have detailed international and national news coverage.

The news weekly, he said, has a tie up with The New York Times for content sharing.

A mining group, Fomento Resources owned by Timblo family, who has already established its presence in electronic media through a local cable television channel 'Prudent', is financing the tabloid.

Gupta's newsmagazine has a competitor in the form of Herald's weekend supplement, which is currently taking shape.

Michael Pereira, General Manager of Herald Publication, talking about the magazine, said it would be a complete news magazine 'Herald Review' which will carry hard htitting stories.

Herald is also in the final stages of launching its first ever Travel magazine 'Herald Holidays', which will be circulated through outbound flights and also to the tourism sector.

Pereira said the magazine would be a mix of lifestyle and travel stuff, with Goa as a focus.

"We will be highlighting even international destinations. The inaugural issue is on Bhutan," he said.

Herald’s Marathi newspaper would be a milestone in Goa’s journalism.

The newspaper edited by Sanjay Dhavalikar, is scheduled to be launched in mid-August. "The main thrust would be a local content. This newspaper will be completely independent from its English edition," said Dhavalikar.

The newspaper will create its own readership, he added.

Herald began as a Portuguese newspaper which later changed into English language with a strong base among Goan Catholics.

Dhavalikar said that the 16-page Marathi broadsheet newspaper will break new grounds in the media field of Goa.

Goa currently has eight Marathi newspapers, three English dailies and a Konkani newspaper besides a weekly and around four monthly magazines.
