Speaker Arlekar appeals for सहिष्णुता (tolerance)
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 19 March 2012 13:54 ISTRajendra Arlekar as the Speaker of Assembly 2012
Rajendra Arlekar, newly elected Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, has appealed to all the legislators to follow the rich Indian democratic tradition of सहिष्णुता (tolerance).
Arlekar was elected unopposed the Speaker on the first day of Assembly today.
The election was conducted by pro-tem speaker Mahadev Naik.
“We always quote British Parliament while running the Assembly. But the Indian democracy also has a rich Indian tradition with equally great conventions”, said Arlekar while thanking the members.
Tolerance is not an apt word for सहिष्णुता. But if we understand the spirit of tolerance, then it would be very easy to conduct the proceedings of the House without any clashes, felt the Speaker.
He also quoted Voltaire, the great French philosopher, to tell the House the approach he would follow in conducting the House - “I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”
Chief minister Manohar Parrikar, opposition leader Pratapsing Rane, MGP leader and PWD minister Sudin Dhawalikar and GVP leader Mickky Pacheco also congratulated Arlekar.
Most of the hawks who were instrumental in wrongly advising the Leadership, last time to bring out a CD and circulate it to all the schools, need to remain away or should be kept away from becoming too much active to bring about the downfall of a good Government on silly unimportant issues....
If anybody in the Cabinet or in the Govt is still insisting on cuts and commissions---such man needs to be exposed and punished....People are fed up of the rampant corruption and loot and want some clean administration....
Congratulations Rajendrabhai.
I am sure your oratory skill, voracious reading habit and good knowledge on parliamentary procedure will make your tenure a great success.
Let your Gavel lead to justice.
